Coconut Palm Trees (Cocos nucifera) are tapped for 25-40 years and use less water than most other crops.
Since the tree produces for so long they are not cut down after each harvest. It is produced by tapping the sweet nectar from the tropical coconut palm tree flower and drying the nutrient rich juice in a large open kettle drum.Unlike the production of Palm Oil (made from the Elaeis guineensis) which has received a negative image for causing damage to the natural environment though deforestation and habitat loss for endangered species, Coconut Palm Sugar is produced on small, sustainable, cooperative owned farms.
